Jeremy Kahn – piano
He is one of the most sought-after jazz pianists in Chicago. Graduate of Boston’s New England Conservatory, he has recorded with a number of renowned artists, from Dizzy Gillespie and Aretha Franklin to Joni Mitchell. During his Poznań solo performance, Jeremy Kahn will take us on a musical tour from mainstream jazz to avant-garde, thus confirming his status as a virtuoso.

The quartet led by saxophonist Juli Wood is an ensemble of outstanding instrumentalists which draws on the traditions of the greatest American jazz icons. Chicago Calling takes the audience on a unique musical tour of the history of Chicago’s legends and the venues they played in. The concert will feature pieces by such artists as Gene Ammons, Fred Anderson, Von Freeman, Clifford Jordan, Sun Ra and Johnny Griffin. Besides playing the sax, Julii Wood will also sing a few songs performed originally by Dinah Washington, Joe Williams and Johnny Hartman. Harrison Bankhead (bass) together with Avreealem Ra (drums) will give a show of magic playing the kalimbas in a Fred Anderson’s composition.

Vincent Chancey is an experienced French horn player and composer. He has released 3 albums as a leader and performed on over 150 as a sideman. Having graduated from the Southern Illinois University School of Music, he studied with Julius Watkins in New York. He started his career in the 1970s, playing mostly with big bands such as Sun Ra Arkestra, Lester Bowie Brass Fantasy, The Gil Evans Orchestra, David Murray Big Band, Carla Bley Big Band and AACM founder Muhal Richard Abrams’s band.
He has performed with a number of popular artists, including Maxwell, Aretha Franklin, Elvis Costello and Charlie Haden Liberation Orchestra. As Vincent Chancey himself says, the French horn is his natural voice; he only wishes it gained more recognition as a jazz instrument. At the Poznań gig, he will perform together with clarinettist Jason Stein, bassist Jason Roebke and Polish drummer Kuba Suchar, who has had a lot of experience collaborating with the top Chicago jazz scene performers (on a joint projects with Mike Reed and Rob Mazurek, among others).

Switchback is a captivating and mature fusion of American and European jazz. The members have their roots in different areas of jazz and improvised music. Mars Williams (USA), a charismatic saxophonist, has been working with the Chicago free jazz elite for years. He is one of the founders of Peter Brötzmann Chicago Tentet. His contribution to Switchback is the energy of rock music - the genre he took up initially. Hilliard Greene (USA), a Berklee College of Music graduate, has worked with excellent free jazz musicians for many years. He has performed with American singer Jimmy Scott, as well as with Cecil Taylor and Don Pullen. Klaus Kugel (Germany) is the elite of European jazz & improvised music drummers. Wacław Zimpel (Poland), a thoroughly educated clarinet virtuoso, is fascinated by vibrant music of all kinds and styles. He smoothly blends classic jazz with free improvisation and folk traditions of various cultures. In April 2015 Switchback released an album to a great reception.
